VOTER REGISTRATION Mandatory as of January 1, 2006
FAQ
- Why do I have to register to vote?
- Statewide voter registration is required as part of the federal Help America Vote Act.
- How do I register?
- Fill out the EB 131 (PDF) form and bring it to a town board meeting or arrange another time to
meet with the clerk. Identification will be required to complete the process. After
January 1, 2006 the form may be mailed to the clerk and ID given at the polling place.
You may also register to vote on election day at the polling place. This will potentially
cause long lines on election day so it would be best to register ahead of time.
- Is my personal information kept secure?
- The original voter registration form will be kept in a secure location within the Town of
Howard. The form will never leave the town. The information will be entered into the
State database using a secure internet connection. The only information that the state
may release is your name, address and the last time that you have voted. This is
information that is public record even under the old system.
- What happens if I register but never vote?
- Your name will be kept in the database for four years. After four years a notice will be
sent to you saying that you will be removed from the voter registration list. At that time
you may send written notice that you would like to remain on the list. If you don’t do
that you will be removed and have to fill out a new registration form when you want to
vote.
- How do I prove that I am registered?
- The state will send you a registration card with your name and address on one side and
the polling place on the other side. Your name will also appear on poll list.
- Can I register before I am 18?
- You may register if you are at least 17 ½ and will be 18 by the next election day.
